What science and religion dialog? They deal with areas of thought which don’t overlap. Science is data; it tells us what the data can and can’t indicate regarding the world we inhabit. The necessary data to infer how life forms progressed from single very simple, very crude cells and on upward from there to whales and cows and humans? That necessary data piles up deeper and deeper every year, and shows us that story of life in ever-clearer fine detail.
Religion is about unprovable matters of soul, spirit, power, GOD, and the like. When a religion contains its own “story of life” and that story, as read by the members of that religion, comes into conflict with the data-driven story, the overlap is apparent but not subject to “dialog” since religion doesn’t found itself on data and science never goes anywhere without it.
I am a believing Christian who considers himself saved by Grace through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. Every attempt to rush into so-called dialogs wielding self-styled “reasons” to accept the spiritually derived version is so filled with adversarial argument (the kind prosecutors and defense attorneys use to sway juries when looking at a single set of facts) including slipshod sophistries, failure to consider the logical consequences of their arguments, deliberate conflation of analogy with proof, willfully ignoring reams of contrary information, etc?? I find them impossible to respect.
GOD revealed Himself to the bronze-age forbears of modern Jewry in a way that has theology, forgiveness, mercy, love, and patience all baked into it. But that’s the baked-in part. The bones (Adam, Eve, Eden, the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the Flood, the Tower of Babel, Methuselah, – – ) those bones are relics of bronze age storytelling. GOD baked His cake of self-revelation around those bones, but they were nothing more than a cake pan, not the cake.
Verse 3 in Chapter 1 is the one part of Genesis which is historically and scientifically true: “And GOD said, ‘Let there be light.’’ But that was 13.8 billion years ago.
